I first came across Joe English through his 1985 album, What You Need, driving Gospel rock at it's best, then I bought his 1987 Back To Basics Joe English 101, a disappointing album due to too much drum machine and synthesizers.This album features Lights To The World from 1980 and Held Accountable from 1982.Joe sings lead vocals while playing the drums, he sings in a white soul style, backed by electric keyboards and, to a lesser extent, electric guitars and brass instruments.The songs don't have the uptempo pace of What You Need, being mostly mid tempo with clear Gospel lyrics throughout. The only instrumental is Thief In The Night.While specfic tracks don't tend to stand out, it's all well worth hearing and, if found at a reasonable price, good value too.
